I've been called a hater in my lifetime. Simply because of my discriminating taste, and desire for greatness in things that people say are great. I give props where props are do. I take words seriously. So if someone says something is "good", then it better not just be "ok." Which brings me to Cupcake Counter at 229 W. Madison Ave, downtown Chicago. About a year or so ago, my friend said that I should visit it, because the cupcakes were great. I will say, that I will make an hour trip to settle my sweet tooth. Today, my neighbor and I were running some errands, and decided that we needed a sweet fix that wasn't too far from home. I mentioned to her about Cupcake Counter, and that I wasn't able to find it in the past. So I gave the shop a call to get clear directions, because obviously I was having difficulty finding it. The lady who answered the phone told me that they were located on Madison between Wells and Franklin. She also mentioned that if you blink that you would miss them. Well obviously so, because, I have passed it at least a million times before. It's right next to the LaQuinta Inn.
We get there and it is a cute petite shop, that couldn't have been more than eight feet wide. Sitting there in the case was a variety of flavors from S'mores, Cookies & Cream to plain vanilla with sprinkles on top. There was no pretense to the frosting, which to me isn't a big deal. As long as it taste good is all that matters to me. So I got a vanilla and a red velvet. My neighbor/friend got a s'mores and cookies and cream. Can you say moist and still warm. The frosting was rich but still remained a light tight. You can tell that they actually use butter, unlike so many of the cupcakes on the market. Aside from the cupcakes being $3.50. It was a delish experience.
Even though I'm repping Sugar Rush Cupcakery, I recommend you check it out www.cupcakecounter.com 229 W. Madison.
Besides there's enough for everyone.

Tell that story....you know the one you normally tell about how Denise's Kitchen Concepts inspired Sugar Rush.....
Ok, I wil tell it...the short version.
See one day the new, now management of Sugar Rush walked into Denise's kitchen and received more than a whiff of some yummy goodness. Sugar Rush could not contain herself, asking what is this deliciousness I detec!?!t as she dove face-first into my first batch vanilla velvets....that's right, I said vanilla velvets. She ate them all! Not 6, not 12 but all 24 meticulously mastered cupcake con-, per-fections!
I was hot! I yelled a gutter-voiced slow-mo NOOOOOO!
But, it was too late. They were gone. Not even a crumb that only the most minute of critters could detect was left for me to savor. In an instance my delicate decadence was no more. Tears streamed and the kitchen was awash.
But, there was something new. From the tears, emerged a sort of purging, an emerging. There was a new Dena, oops! I mean a new Sugar Rush before Denise's Kitchen Concepts. There was a fervor. A glimmer and a new twinkle in the eyes of Sugar Rush. There was a new lie dot, a bigger one! (Only Sugar Rush knows what I mean here.)
There was indeed a spark...of excitement. Sugar Rush began feverishly washing the mixing bowls and cleaning the cupcake pans. She tore through the cabinets almost in a rage. Out came the flour, the sugar, the 100% madagascar bourbon vanilla! She ran to the fridge. Out came the butter, the eggs and the secret moistening ingredient! She flew to the computer and started typing away...command click...command click! She turned to me with a most dastardly grin (much like the Grinch).
She opened her mouth to speak. In a most curious tone she declared: Tis my destiny to take my Honda outfitted with a trailer hitch on the rode. I am now a mobile cupcake unit. I am SUGAR RUSH MOBILE CUPCAKERY!!!!!
THANK YOU DENISE'S KITCHEN CONCEPTS! YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE!
